Home Medical Equipment for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Patients

Throughout his lifetime, a young man with Duchenne muscular dystrophy will have ever increasing needs for equipment to help minimize the progression of deformities, to enhance mobility and independence, and to improve general health and quality of life. The list of potential equipment needs will include daily living aids, bathing and toileting products, and access and mobility devices. The most significant of these are the wheelchairs, both manual and power, that will be needed over the years. The ongoing deterioration of the muscles causes the necessity of complicated seating and positioning devices used to hold the skeleton in as near normal alignment as possible. During the latter years of his life, the young man with Duchenne muscular dystrophy is also likely to require the use of respiratory assist equipment.
