Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) is a condition that can strike polio survivors anywhere from 10 to 40 years after their recovery from polio. It is believed that PPS is caused by the destruction of individual nerve terminals in the motor units that remain after the initial polio attack.
Because symptoms of PPS vary greatly, it is difficult to predict equipment needs. Equipment needs may be as simple as daily living aids, may progress to include mobility devices, and may ultimately involve significant respiratory devices.
