Spina Bifida

Spina Bifida is a serious birth defect that occurs when there is a failure of some vertebrae to fully develop in the fetus; therefore the spine fails to close properly. In the most severe form of spina bifida, the spinal cord protrudes (or herniates) through the back.

Home Medical Equipment for Spina Bifida Patients

For children with spina bifida, it is important to strive for as "normal" a lifestyle as possible. The location and severity of the lesion dictates the need for medical equipment. In milder cases, the children are likely to be ambulatory and may only need a walker or crutches. For the more severely involved children who require a wheelchair for mobility, great care and attention must be given in order to provide an appropriate seating system. Children with spina bifida are likely to need pressure-relieving cushions. They may also need a tilt-n-space option to reduce pressure and fatigue, and seating modifications such as thoracic supports, anterior chest supports, or customized footrest excursion.

Many other types of equipment may be required, such as bathing and toileting aids, daily living aids, environmental control units and incontinence supplies.
