If a manual wheelchair won't allow you to accomplish MRADLs in your home, then a scooter is the next choice. Scooter use requires patient to have sufficient trunk strength, hand grip & supper extremity function, balance to sit upright, requires ability to stand and pivot and typically requires more space in home to maneuver. To determine this requires that someone do an assessment in your home before the scooter is ordered. Note: Medicare will deny a scooter as not being medically necessary when it is needed for use outside the home only. A scooter that will be used for recreation and leisure will be denied as not medically necessary.
